Reynolds Polymer Technology Assists University of Wisconsin and the International Daya Bay Collaboration Find New Neutrino Transformation

Hong Kong (PRWEB) May 15, 2012

The search for elusive neutrinos outside of a nuclear power complex in China achieved unexpected early success utilizing a design requiring R-Cast acrylic cylinders from Reynolds Polymer Technology, Inc. (RPT). In only two months of data taking in the field and with only two-thirds of the acrylic cylinders up and running, scientists measured for the first time ever one of the key descriptors of the neutrinos elusive behavior.

We were certainly surprised how fast we made the first measurement, explained Karsten Heeger, University of Wisconsin-Madison physics professor and U.S. manager for the Daya Bay project. It turns [out] this neutrino oscillation probability we measured was much bigger than expected. After only a couple of weeks of data taking with detectors a mile away from the nuclear power plant we started seeing a disappearance effect.

RPT assisted in the development of eight custom-designed precision R-Cast acrylic tanks that allow scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Daya Bay Collaboration in China to detect antineutrinos called Theta-13 (pronounced theta-one-three) from a nuclear power plant outside of Hong Kong. The R-Cast acrylic cylindrical tanks measure 13 feet tall, 13 feet in diameter, 0.75 inches thick and form the inner center of the antineutrino detectors resting inside a larger steel chamber with photomultiplier tube (PMT) light sensors. The entire assembly sits in pairs in pools of ultrapure water to shield the antineutrino detectors from environmental interference.

Its exciting to be part of such an important discovery, said Roger R. Reynolds, III, CEO of RPT. Knowing our R-Cast acrylic cylinders played a role, however small in the scheme of things, in facilitating the team of scientists with their discovery is something we are proud and honored to be a part of.

Heegers team selected R-Cast acrylic for this project because acrylic, in general, is compatible with the scintillating fluids that fill the detectors and that make up the target medium for the experiment. When neutrinos interact in the detector they produce little flashes, explained Heeger. The acrylic vessels allow the light to pass through so that it can be detected with highly sensitive photosensors outside the vessels.

Known as a mixing angle, Theta-13 describes the probability that an electron antineutrino will change into another type of antineutrino. This measurement answers a longstanding question as to how the elusive particles called neutrinos can appear to vanish as they travel through space, even over a relatively short distance of just one mile.

Heeger went on to explain that this measurement is an important milestone in understanding why we live in a universe made up of matter and not antimatter. Neutrinos are elementary particles essentially moving at the speed of light. These particles have been around since the beginning of time and continue to be produced in nuclear reactions such as inside a nuclear power plant. It turns [out that] neutrinos may hold the clue why the world we live in is made up of matter, said Heeger.

The Daya Bay experiment built tanks at the China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group power plant which has six reactors. It is among the top 5 most powerful reactor complexes in the world. The antineutrino detectors are located in three underground experimental halls specifically built for this experiment under a mountain. The detectors sit at varying distances from the power plant so that the team can detect the transformation of one kind of neutrino into another as a function of distance from the power plant.

Waters of the World Threatened By Dumping of 180M Tonnes of Toxic Mine Waste

Washington/Ottawa (PRWEB) February 28, 2012

Each year, mining companies dump more than 180 million tonnes of hazardous mine waste into rivers, lakes, and oceans worldwide, threatening vital bodies of water with toxic heavy metals and other chemicals poisonous to humans and wildlife, according to report released today by Earthworks and MiningWatch Canada, two leading mining reform groups.

The investigation identifies the worlds waters that are suffering the greatest harm or at greatest risk from the dumping of mine waste. The report, Troubled Waters: How Mine Waste Dumping is Poisoning our Oceans, Rivers, And Lakes, also names the leading companies that continue to use this irresponsible method of disposal.

Mine processing wastes, or tailings, can contain as many as three dozen dangerous chemicals including arsenic, lead, mercury, and cyanide. The report found that the mining industry has left mountains of such waste from Alaska and Canada to Norway and Southeast Asia.

Polluting the worlds waters with mine tailings is unconscionable, and damage it causes is largely irreversible, said Payal Sampat, international program director for Washington, DC-based Earthworks. Mining companies must stop using our oceans, rivers, and lakes as dumping grounds for their toxic waste.

The report says some multinational mining companies are guilty of a double standard.

Some companies dump their mining wastes into the oceans of other countries, even though their home countries have bans or restrictions against it, said Catherine Coumans, research coordinator for Ottawa-based MiningWatch Canada. We found that of the worlds largest mining companies, only one has policies against dumping in rivers and oceans, and none against dumping in lakes.

There are safer methods of disposing of mine tailings, including returning the waste to the emptied mine. In other places, dumping of any kind is too risky. No feasible technology exists to remove and treat mine tailings from oceans; even partial cleanup of tailings dumped into rivers or lakes is prohibitively expensive.

We are really suffering because of the millions of tons of mine waste that Barrick Gold dumps in and around our river system every year, said Mark Ekepa, Chairman of the Porgera Landowners Association. Our rivers run red, our houses have become unstable, we have lost fresh drinking water and places to put our food gardens, and sometimes children get carried away by the waste.

A number of nations, including the United States, Canada, and Australia, have had restrictions on dumping mine tailings in natural bodies of water. Even these national regulations, however, are being eroded by amendments, exemptions, and loopholes that allow destructive dumping in lakes and streams. Even though U.S. law long banned lake dumping, in 2009 the U.S. Supreme Court allowed Coeur DAlene Mines of Idaho to dump 7 million tonnes of tailings from the Kensington Gold Mine in Alaska into Lower Slate Lake, filling the lake and destroying all life in it.

In its August 2011 project description, Taseko Mines Ltd. proposed to the federal Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency to reclassify Little Fish Lake and Fish Creek in British Columbia as a tailings impoundment for its proposed Prosperity Gold-Copper Mine. The watershed is home to grizzly bear and highly productive rainbow trout, and is an important cultural area for the Tsilhqotin People. After being refused environmental approvals for the past 17 years, the company has re-applied with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency with plans to build a tailings impoundment to dispose of 480 million tons of tailings and 240 million tons of waste rock in the basin of the creek and lake, burying the ecosystems under a hundred meters of waste.

To download a copy of the report, and for more information, including print-ready photos, please see: http://www.nodirtygold.org/troubledwaters.cfm

EARTHWORKS’ No Dirty Gold campaign works to educate and motivate consumers and jewelry retailers to push the mining industry towards more responsible practices. Over 80 jewelry retailers have committed to switching to cleaner gold sources when available, and more than 100,000 consumers have joined the effort.

MiningWatch Canada is a pan-Canadian initiative supported by environmental, social justice, Aboriginal and labour organisations from across the country. It addresses the urgent need for a coordinated public interest response to the threats to public health, water and air quality, fish and wildlife habitat and community interests posed by irresponsible mineral policies and practices in Canada and around the world.
